How to Color this Winter Season

What’s better in the winter time, than going to the beauty salon for some much needed pampering? Not much else; I know. The beauty salon can always turn a drab, cold, miserable day around for me. So, I try and get in there as often as possible during the winter. It’s like a small oasis where you can go and forget about the fact that everything is freezing over outside. So, when the seasons begin to change and the cold hits, I always make an effort to make a hair appointment at my favorite salon. Or Beauty Supply to check out some new beautiful wigs. The hard part is figuring out what I want.

These hair styles are still very popular and will probably not be going away any time soon. But, we can tell why they are so popular, they can create such a dimensional look to anyone’s hair. So, how better to achieve a shiny dimensional look, than highlighting or lowlighting your hair this winter?

So what are the differences between Balayage, Sombre and Ombre? This is a very common question because these styles look very similar. But, mainly the differences lie within the techniques used and some minor physical attributes. I will go over in detail the differences below.

Balayage

This style looks the most natural on clients due to the fact that the highlights are less symmetrical, lighter than normal highlights, and they are randomly placed throughout your hair, particularly the lower ends of your hair. A Balayage creates a casual grown-out look and feel to your hair, while also looking gorgeously effortless. It also gives the illusion that the sun naturally lightened your hair.

The lightening process and technique, to get a balayage, is a little different from performing traditional highlights. For example, the word balayage, derived from the French, means “to sweep”. This is appropriate because the bleach is applied in a sweeping motion over the selected sections of hair. This usually creates chunkier highlights, compared to traditional thin highlights. For a Balayage, hair stylists also, don’t use foil to wrap the hair. Instead, they use cellophane to make sure the highlights come out less defined and less saturated. This soft lightening is what makes your hair look like the sun naturally lightened it. Lastly, the highlights never reach the top of the head or roots, but look very nice when they start a little above your ears.

However, for occasional cross-dressers and people that prefer wearing wigs, there are many Balayage styled wigs out there on the market today. Sombre (Soft Ombre)

This style is a mix of both a balayage and an ombre because it still creates a lot of dimension in the hair, while also showing a definite transition in color. However, the transition into another color is softer than a typical ombre. It is only a slight lightening of the hair color. As you can tell by the picture to the left showcasing our Destiny Wig, the hair gets lighter towards the bottom but, not that dramatically. This look is very popular for mature woman and honestly creates such a nice, fluid, polished look on anyone.

But, unlike a balayage, sombre’s consist of the lightening of close to all the lower parts of your hair. Whereas, a balayage is only some selected pieces throughout your hair. This look gives a more natural, grown-out looking hair style because it blends much better than a traditional ombre. Many people are loving this hairstyle today. It makes your hair look lighter and brighter, which is always a good thing! We see celebrities, like Jessica Alba (located to the right above) and many more, featuring this hair style all the time in the tabloids. I mean if the top celebs love it, it must be a great idea, right?

Ombre

This is a more dramatic dip dye hair style because the change in color is very transparent. You can clearly see the difference in the transition of the hair color. It is the least blended style and definitely the boldest. It makes a staple, while also looking very pretty. Younger ladies adore this hairstyle today. It’s different and makes a serious statement. You can see this style Ombre nowadays in many different colors as well. It is very popular to see people with pink, purple, or blue ends. Since the color is extremely light at the ends, it is easy to temporarily test out different colors. Some people even mix it up and try two or three colors.
