Ask Katie: What’s the secret to a soft, flattering smokey eye?

A soft smokey eye is not about piling on dark shadow. It is about placement, blending, and knowing when to stop. Keep depth close to the lash line and let it fade upward for that soft, sultry finish.
In this article, we’ll cover:
- Keep darker shades close to the lash line and outer corner
- Blend lighter tones through the crease
- Use a clean brush to blend
- A lighter touch creates a softer finish
Dear Tessa,
Oh, the smokey eye. Equal parts magic and betrayal! A good smokey eye is built with patience.
Most people go straight in with a deep black or charcoal, hoping for the best. But that’s where things take a turn for the worse. The softness you are chasing comes from lighter shades that do most of the work, with darker tones used carefully.

Start lighter than you think and slowly build the color up. A mid tone brown or taupe should be your base. Sweep it through the crease and slightly above it, letting it haze outward. This is what creates that soft cloud around the eye. Blend until there are no obvious edges left.
Now it’s time to build the depth. Keep your darker shade low on the lid. Press it right along the upper lash line and slightly into the outer corner of the eye. Not all over the lid. Not up to the crease. Just hugging the lashes and sitting on the outer third. From there, gently blend upward so it fades into your softer shade without climbing too high.

Think of it like this. The darkest point lives closest to your lashes; everything else is just a soft echo of that. If you want a little extra drama, you can lightly smudge that same darker shade along the lower lash line, keeping it close and diffused. Just enough to balance the top out.
Here is where people often go wrong. They try to fix harshness by adding more product. The real fix is usually a clean brush with no extra product. Just soft circular motions along the edges until everything melts together. For a little extra pop, apply a slightly lighter shade onto the center of the lid or inner corner. This lifts the eye and keeps the look from feeling heavy.

And please, whatever you do, don’t skip mascara. A smokey eye without lashes can feel a bit unfinished!
With love,
Katie
