When will transgender conferences open up again?
Over the past year there have been some well-intentioned false-starts by some of the annual conferences during the height of Covid. However, as we close in on the end of 2021 can we finally look forward to the conferences opening up? We certainly hope so, and to whet your appetite we can announce that the ‘First Event’ in MA is fully into the planning stage.
When and where will it take place?
THe 2022 conference opens on Wednesday, January 12th and runs through to Sunday, January 16th. Most of the activities take place at the glorious Boston Park Plaza Hotel. First Event is once of the largest and most well run conferences in the annual calendar. If you have never attended a conference, there can be not be one we could more highly recommend.
What can I expect to do at the First Event?
From the moment you arrive there is a non-stop schedule of social events as well as a full rosta of educational opportunities. There are also networking events, open mic, screenings and of course a fabulous vendor selection offering something for everyone.
What are the Highlights of the First Event?
That’s always difficult as there are so many to choose from. These are some of our favorites from past years:
Fashion Show
The 2020 extravaganza means 2022 has a lot to live up to. Cocktails preceding the famed fashion show is a great way to kick-off the Friday night. The 2020 transFormed show brought together transgender and non-binary models in a visual celebration of trans identity and community.
Banquet
For many ladies, the Saturday night banquet is the highlight of the whole event. Sharing large tables with old friends and new and dressed in your favorite gown and matching bling you will have a dreamy time. The banquet is not complete without the Red Carpet cocktail hour beforehand. You’ll want to grab some companions for some pictures with the most glorious backdrop of the Ballroom.
Workshops
The First Event schedule of workshops is famed for probably being the most extensive on offer from all the national conferences. There is an amazing choice of learning opportunities on offer throughout the week, not just for transgender attendees but also for those who love and support them. Subjects can include sessions as diverse as ‘Creating a safer school for your child’ to a session on ‘Safe binding, packing and tucking’.
Break-out Lounges
Being such a large, well attended conference, there are plenty of opportunities to meet up with other individuals who share similar traits of your identity. There are community-specific lounges for many groups such as transmasculine, transgender people of color, non-binary and trans youth.
Open Mic
After the Saturday banquet, what better way to relax and celebrate by watching the open mic performances by singer/songwriters and the talents of many conference attendees. All performers are welcome! Not just musicians – you can tell a story or recite a poem. The stage is yours to share.
Should I be booking for a 2022 transgender conference?
Our answer is an unequivocal ‘yes’. All the conferences around the country are an incredibly valuable resource and experience to transgender and non-binary folk everywhere. If we don’t support and attend these events then we could lose what few there are remaining.
