Practical Makeup Tips From Leading TG Makeup Artist

We recently had the good fortune to interview Scarlett from Scarlett’s Makeovers in CT, one of the leading makeup artists in the NE and a regular on the Conference circuit. If you are attending a conference/event that Scarlett is attending make sure you contact her well in advance to ensure you get a spot with her.

Scarlett has worked with TG clients for over 10 years and in addition to going on the road to the major conferences, being the regular makeup artist for monthly events like Triangles in Danbury, CT, she has her own studio in Thompson CT. You can visit Scarlett’s own studio for makeover application, makeup lessons, coaching in female deportment and even photo-shoots and her prices are some of the best around.

Our very own Dawn Gold insists on using Scarlett when she herself regularly attends the Triangles events in Danbury, CT because she not only receives a great makeover but she leaves feeling as if she’s on cloud nine after the whole experience. We wanted to share some of Scarlett’s practices so you have access to professional makeup tips to help with your own makeup at home.

We asked Scarlett about her unique approach to her clients: “My goal is to provide a safe, comfortable place – a sanctuary – for clients to relax and be themselves. I help them to express their full feminine personality and unique style through my makeup and coaching skills. Ultimately, I hope to leave each person I meet with confidence in her presentation, and in herself as an individual.” GB share some of the same clients who visit Scarlett and everyone we meet ‘raves’ about her skills, her patience, and her friendship.

Diving in we thought our readers would love to know the most popular questions that clients ask her when they are trying to sharpen their makeup skills. “Nobody likes to put together the perfect outfit, only to have a makeup mishap that ruins the whole look! From foundation color to liquid eyeliner, I have been asked to solve all sorts of makeup problems over my time as a TG-focused makeup artist.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and my best advice for the beginner:

Q: How do you keep liquid eyeliner in a straight line?

A: Everybody loves the dramatic look of liquid eyeliner, but no one loves the mess. It can be incredibly difficult to keep neat, especially if you’re just starting out with makeup or if you’re trying to rush to a party. My suggestion is to put the liquid eyeliner away until you have a few more practice hours under your belt and reach instead for a gel eyeliner or a ‘liquid eye pencil’. Gels usually come in a small glass pot and with a very thin brush. ‘Liquid pencil’ may not make much sense, but it is basically a soft gel consistency in a pencil form. Either of these options will give you a dramatic line, but are much easier to control than liquid, and much easier to clean up the edges if you make a mistake. The gels are even available in a ton of fun colors to really give you options!

Q: Makeup is so expensive. How do I buy the right stuff and stop wasting money on colors that don’t work?

A: Unfortunately there’s a lot of trial and error in makeup because everyone has unique coloring and features. It doesn’t help that being objective about your own look is very difficult. Best chance is to ask for help. Find a friend that looks like she’s got her act together to experiment on you, and see what you like or don’t like. Go to a beauty counter at a department store and ask for some tips, or a makeover (often they will do your whole face if you are serious about making some purchases after). Even going into a typical CVS will give you a ‘Beauty Consultant’ as a resource. In fact, this last option is probably the best place to start. The average pharmacy has many options, and at a fraction of the designer brand pricing.

Or you could always shop our trusted makeup selections. They are affordable and the color pigments are vibrant and can last all day.

Q: Does makeup expire?

A: Yes! If it is stored in extreme hot or cold temperatures for any period of time, makeup composition will change. Even stored in ideal conditions you may find your favorite products smell odd or have a different consistency. Whenever there is a change in the color, texture, smell or consistency of a product, throw it away. It usually indicates that moisture or bacteria has taken over, and you do not want that on your skin! It’s a good idea to rotate your products even without noticing a change; six months to a year is usually reasonable to consider replacing most items.

Q: How do I make my lips look bigger without looking like a clown?

A: First, you’ll need a lip liner about two shades darker than your lip color. Second, you’ll need two rules; work from the center of your lips to the corners, and never draw outside the corners of your lips. Now you’re ready to give this a try. Use the pencil to draw a light, smooth line on your natural lip line. Then draw a second line on the outside of the first line without a gap; basically making the first line double-wide. Continue until your lips have the fullness you want. Fill in with your lip color; this means you’ll be covering all but the outermost edge of the lip liner in addition to filling in your natural lips. You can also add some shiny lip gloss to the center of your lips to make them appear fuller.
