Makeup is an investment for many, so it would be a shame to have to bin any due to not taking proper care of it. We’ve found that when it’s looked after properly, it will last a long time; this is especially true of items such as makeup brushes. We’ve popped some tips together on how to store your makeup so it stays fresh and most importantly, lasts.
How To Store Your Makeup And Look After It Properly
How To Store Makeup Brushes
If you’re able to, we recommend storing makeup brushes upright, brush end at the top. The reason for this is so the bristles aren’t pushed against, and have the opportunity to fan out and keep their natural shape. Try and find the right size container for the number of brushes you have, you could use anything from a favorite mug to a small vase or pot. Organizing by size is also quite a nice idea if you have a lot of brushes. They’ll look pretty cute on a dressing table too if you want them on show.
How To Store Lipstick
Lipstick is best stored in a dry, cool place, as if it gets too hot it has a tendency to melt.
How To Store Eyeshadow Palettes
Eyeshadow palettes aren’t as sensitive to light as other products, however, if you have gel eyeshadow palettes they need to be kept cool. So, in the drawer with your lipstick is the best place for them. If you have lots of eyeshadow singles, you could pop them into a small ice cube tray so you can see all your colors at the same time.
How To Store Makeup In Drawers
If your makeup storage comprises one drawer, it won’t take long before it’s all mixed up, you don’t know what you have, and even if you do the chances of finding it are slim! In this case, we highly recommend getting some drawer organizers, which are different-sized compartments you can slot into the drawer to separate your items. By popping some of these into your drawer, you can organize your makeup nicely so you can find everything you need really easily.
Should I Store My Makeup In The Bathroom?
We recommend keeping your makeup away from the bathroom if you can. We’ve already mentioned that many makeup items like to be dry and cool, which is generally the complete opposite of a bathroom – especially if you’re partial to a hot bath – that’s a lot of moisture floating around in the air!
How To Maintain Makeup
Keep Your Makeup Brushes Clean
If you want to know how to store makeup brushes, one of the answers is: clean. Depending on how often you use your brushes, will dictate how often you should clean them. To clean, take each brush individually as you won’t get them clean if you try to do them all at once, and wash them with water and shampoo. If you don’t have any shampoo, soap works well too. Use your fingers to rub out the excess makeup softly. You can swirl the brush on the palm of soapy hands or directly onto a hard soap too – this can work quite well to remove more soiled makeup. Have the water continue to run through the brush until the makeup is gone. After you’ve removed all the makeup from the brush, make sure the bristles are all back in place and lean it at an angle to dry on a towel. The angle is so the water runs off the brush and doesn’t sit on it. Make sure the brushes are completely dry before you go put away so mold doesn’t grow while they are in storage. The same advice applies to makeup sponges and beauty blenders too.
Don’t Chuck It Back In The Drawer
We appreciate that everyone is busy nowadays, and time is always of the essence. But when you act hastily, you will be asking for trouble. Your makeup will thank you for taking care of it, so we always recommend putting it away properly. Don’t just chuck it in the drawer as this could cause liquid eyeliners to leak, or lids to become loose or even break.
Keep Lids Tight
Talking of lids, keeping lids on makeup items tight is another tip of ours. This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised. When exposed to air, makeup can go hard, get wet, or become dry. If you are getting ready in a rush, that is the perfect time to not be mindful and leave something open. Trust us and take the extra 2 seconds it takes to tighten the lids. You’ll thank us later.
Don’t Just Throw Your Makeup in Your Purse
How many of us run out the door and throw our makeup into our purses carelessly? We know we’re occasionally guilty! Your makeup will crack and break if it is just thrown in the bottom of your bag. The best thing to do is to keep a separate small makeup bag that you can put in your purse. That will keep everything safe and in one place which makes it easier when you have to grab something for a touch-up while you’re out.
When To Replace Your Makeup Brushes
If you look after your makeup brushes correctly and keep them clean, you can expect good quality brushes to last between one and three years. Once you notice the brushes aren’t doing their job as good anymore, chances are it’s time to replace them.
How To Organize Your Makeup
Keeping your makeup organized and storing it properly at home is so important. It will help keep all of your makeup in one place and help prolong its life. Here are some of our top tips for organizing your makeup collection.
Start With A Clear Out
First things first. If you are new to organizing, go through all your makeup and discard anything that has expired or is already too far gone to be saved. Once you’ve gotten rid of the dead weight, you’re in the best place to begin organizing all of the good makeup that you know you will use.
Once you have your keepers, separate them into categories. You can categorize as much or as little as you want. Do what works best for you. A rule of thumb is to keep all your eye makeup together, your face makeup in another spot, and lipsticks in another.
Keep Your Regular Makeup Separate
Store your containers based on what items are used the most. If you use eye shadow every day, keep those up top. Within each container, keep the most used items of that type of makeup up front. The easier it is to see everything in each container the better.
It may seem like a lot, but these steps will help you to keep all your makeup and tools well organized and maintained. Storage is key and with all three steps, your makeup will thank you and you will feel better when the time comes to apply it all. Now get going!!
