How to shape your eyebrows

A feminine eyebrow shape, with a high arch, can help take any CD or TG makeover to the next level. This style eyebrow is VERY feminizing to one’s face. Learning some methods on how to master this look will come in handy for many ladies out there and will elevate your look.

To help you achieve flawless looking eyebrows, we’ve put together some eyebrow shaping tips that will help you on your way to eyebrow greatness. If you are new to the world of eyebrow shaping, it’s worth bearing in mind that not all methods work for everyone so have a read of all our tips and give them a go. We will go over all the different ways to shaping your brows, plus some tips on who would benefit the most from this method.

Plucking your eyebrows with tweezers

This is probably the most used method among experienced ladies and is certainly the cheapest. Our top tip for plucking eyebrows if you are a beginner, is to gain some experience through letting a friend or a professional shape your brows first, before you get your hands on some tweezers. This way you get to see what shape your new eyebrows are, and what they look like specifically on your own face. After you have a full understanding of what hairs need to be removed to get the shape you want, then you can begin plucking yourself. To practice this, you can try plucking the hairs as soon as you see them growing back in. This is the easiest and safest way to practice because the hairs that were removed professionally will be noticeable to the eye. This way, it reduces mistakes, since you will only be plucking the short little hairs growing back in and not the longer hairs.  You can also go online and watch video tutorials. Always make gradual changes, don’t do anything too dramatic! Remember that mistake plucks can’t be taken back (until they grow back!).

Waxing your eyebrows

Another method that is commonly used is waxing. You can go to basically any beauty salon and get your eyebrows waxed for about $10-15 (not including tip). It is a very quick experience but, has a tendency to be a little more painful until you get used to it. For most people this method only causes slight temporary redness but, some other people get bumps or even rashes from this. This mainly happens to people that have sensitive skin. The face is a delicate surface so, for some people ripping hair off with hot wax causes some side effects. However, these side effects don’t usually last long, maybe one or two days at most for the effects wear off and your skin is back to normal. Never attempt to wax your eye brows yourself, unless you are an expert waxer and know what you’re doing.

Eyebrow threading

Another great eyebrow shaping tip is eyebrow threading. This hair removal option is usually cheaper than waxing – around $5-8 usually (not including tip). The way threading is performed consists of twisting two pieces of thread together very close to the eyebrow until the unwanted hair gets caught in the thread and is pulled out of the skin. This can only be performed by a professional. This would be very hard to perform on yourself. It has minimal redness but, the pain is about the same as plucking as you’re pulling the hairs out.

Eyebrow Shaving

This method is more for convenience. If you need a fast little shape up I would recommend using an eyebrow shaver on those pesky hairs growing back in. We recommend using this method mainly for once in a while use. Since the hairs are being cut and not pulled out from the root, the hair grows back much faster than all the other methods. Plus, this could cause dry skin, rashes, and cuts if you are not careful with using the razor. This method also makes it easier to make mistakes with just the flick of your wrist. However, it is a good tool to have in your arsenal for when you feel confident enough to use.

Eyebrow trimming

This method isn’t really a way to shape your eyebrows but, it maintains your overly long hairs. Trimming your brows is a simple process and can help define and perfect your eyebrow shape.  You can ask a professional to do this at the salon while you’re getting tweezed or waxed. If you’re feeling brave you can perform it on yourself with some helpful guidance. Once again, look up some videos online to see how many others perform this. But, all it requires are some small scissors and a little comb. Here’s a super-quick tutorial:

How to trim your own eyebrows

First, comb your hairs directly up towards your hairline. Once you do this, cut the uneven hairs. Make sure not to trim too close to the top of your brows. We recommend keeping some length between your cut and the top of your brow. Afterward, comb hair back in the normal direction and you are done.

Coloring in eyebrows

This is another great way to shape your eyebrows – for people with overly plucked or naturally thin eyebrows, this method is for you. Thick dramatic brows have been popular recently, and people with dainty eyebrows are looking for ways to compete. Well, the good news is you can! Many beauty lines have tons of eyebrow pencils, colors, pens and fillers today. It is super easy to find your shade, and it’s a simple and risk-less method as well – if you don’t like how it turns out, get a makeup remover pad and start over. However, with this method, you still need to wax or pluck your overgrown, unwanted hairs away. The filling is to define or widen the occurring shape you already have.

Using eyebrow stencils

If you’re an eyebrow shaping beginner, these neat little stencils may just become your best friend. Depending on if you want a straight, curved, or angular brow – you take that stencil and place it directly over your eyebrow. Try and position it so most of your eyebrow hair is inside the little cutout. After placement, take your favorite color and start filling in your eyebrow. The stencil will help you get straight lines and will give you the shape that you want. Move the stencil away and touch up your eyebrow for the perfect style. After doing this a couple of times you should get the hang of things and eventually not need a stencil.

Concealing eyebrows

Concealing is when you use modeling wax to mask your existing eyebrows. Next, you cover eyebrows with a foundation to blend the area into your natural skin. Once dry, you can begin drawing in your preferred eyebrow shape and color. This method was and still is most commonly used in the theater. You won’t see very many people that typically wear their eyebrows completely penciled in like this on a daily basis. Maybe for those few people that really don’t have eyebrows, but that is rare. However, you can see this method used a lot more today for many drag queens. Drag queens still use this method to create very extreme and dramatic looks.

Most common products we know of are Mehron Modeling Wax and Crayolin Eyebrow Wax. These products are very similar in appearance and use. They both appear as white wax and when worked between the fingers, the wax becomes pliable, making it easy to smear on. Next, you use a Fixative or cosmetic Sealer on top which usually comes in a nail polish type bottle and is applied using a nail-polish type brush. Again, Mehron and Crayolin both have excellent products. Now is time to use your beard concealer. Apply foundation and then apply powder.  Now the desired eyebrow shape needs to be sketched on using a good quality eyebrow pencil.

If after the ideal shape has been drawn on there are still some tell-tale signs of the old brow, then use Mehron’s Clown White and more foundation to blend in, finishing with powder again. Whilst the effect from a mirror 12 inches away may not seem the most subtle, once your wig and full makeover are in place, you will be amazed at the effect you can create – a new ‘you’ will literally emerge before your very eyes.
