THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAST FORMS AVAILABLE
There are many different types of breast form available on the market today so choosing one to fit both the look you want and within your budget should not be a problem. What can be an issue is the amount of choice that is available today can sometimes be overwhelming. For example, there are many different shapes of breastform on the market from the regular Oval to Triangles and everything in-between including the Asymetrical shape. The different shapes give a different appearance and some are more suited to varying body shapes and sizes than others. Similarly, breastforms are now made from a selection of materials and again the different materials give differing results – cheaper foam made breast forms give the appearance of a well shaped bosom but what you save in price against a silicone for you sacrifice for touch and feel.
Until relatively recently most forms were made for women but nowadays there are many manufacturers that make forms both for men and women so getting a pair to fit well should no longer be a problem. The vast majority available on the market today are silicone breast forms but you can still find cheaper alternatives like foam and other gel forms like Pals. There are even forms that have foam on the inside as ‘padding’ with a layer of silicone or latex on the outside. In the silicone range there are opaque flesh like forms and then there are clear gel forms. Some forms you can swim in and some you can’t. Some manufacturers offer different skin tones, nipple tones and even a matt or non-matt flesh finish. The choices go on and on. To help you sort through different terms and choices available we have compiled a checklist to help you make an informed decision when embarking on your next breast form purchase.
The 2 main considerations you should have when thinking of purchasing the forms are how you will use them and budget available. If you need a pair of forms to be part of a costume for Halloween when you get to dress just once a year and you want to achieve a good look but you are not so concerned with how the forms feel then you would probably be suited to a cheaper alternative like foam boobs that you can have for $40 or less for the pair. Your budget is key since this will generally determine the quality and realism of the forms, particularly silicone. What main factors need to be considered:
MATERIALS: Many dressers start with a bra and some home-made padding whether it be rolled up socks, sponge, birdseed etc but there comes a time when a gurl wants not only the perfect size and shape but the realism of something warm and flesh-like to enhance the experience. The majority of forms today are made from:
- Silicone
- Other gel compounds
- Foam
- Cloth with pellet filling
- Cardboard (usually the ‘joke shop’ variety)
If shopping on a tight budget then Foam, Cloth and Cardboard-moulded boobs are your best option and can be had for under $40 the pair. Advantages are they are fairly damage resistant (compared to silicone) and can give good shape when you choose the correct size but on the down side they will not move, feel or have the touch of a real breast.
Silicone forms are the most common type of form sold today and you can pay anything from approximately $50 for a pair of ‘Closeout’ breastforms to well over $500 for a pair of scientifically engineered forms made to replicate as close as possible a real pair of ladies breasts. This is a wide range in price and what you are often paying for is the quality of the silicone involved. The more expensive silicone will be as close to the proper weight, softness and coloring of human flesh versus a generic silicone forms with a slightly harder compound of silicone with not as much movement and coloring either too dark or very pale. Oversize or Very Large Breastforms also tend to be more expensive. Advantages of silicone are the touch, feel, weight and the movement of the forms will replicate real female breasts. They will warm to body temperature feeling a part of you and will move as you move. Silicone forms can also be attached to the chest cavity with the use of medical grade adhesive allowing the wearer to feel as one. The main disadvantage of silicone is that it is vulnerable to damage from sharp edges, excess weight and extremes of heat or cold. Silicone forms have an outer ‘skin’ layer of PU that encases the liquid silicone and generally the thinner the membrane the more realistic and soft the feel of the forms. But it’s a trade off – ideally you want softness and feel with a fairly robust outer coat to protect your forms.
Other Gel compounds have some of the advantages of silicone combined with being harder-wearing. A good example, that are widely available are Pals breastforms that are medical-grade mineral oils in the form of a soft-gel polymer. Whilst not quite as fluid or soft as silicone they are the very best alternative with the added advantage that they are virtually unbreakable and heal themselves when punctured. You can actually trim the forms to fit your favorite bra if need be and they have a porous surface so will absorb makeup i.e. you can match your own skin tone with a good foundation. Also, reasonably priced from just $49 for the smaller pairs mean these are often good second or recreation pairs of forms. Main disadvantages are they don’t have the exact softness and movement that a silicone form does and the form will absorb color from new/unwashed clothes (like a new black bra) leading to discoloration.
THE DIFFERENT SHAPES: Each year we see more and more variations of an Oval, Triangle etc so that the choice of shape is almost overwhelming but they are all basically variations on 4 main shapes: oval, triangle, asymmetrical and teardrop. Consider what look you want to achieve and that will help determine the shape and size of the Breastform you eventually purchase. Some shapes will ‘droop’ more than others, some will protrude more than others and some will have a fuller spread than others and you just need to match what you want to achieve with what the different shapes will do for you.
Oval Shape breastforms are the forms we see purchased most-often by our clientele, particulary when purchasing their first pair. A regular oval shape from about $89 per pair will fit really well in most bras and gives a very naturalistic or ‘passable’ look. They have a full footprint to fill the bra correctly and they are not overly protruding i.e. if you are looking for the Dolly Parton effect then this is not the shape for you. The GlamourBoutique.com own Oval Breastforms are made to fit our see-through pocket-bras and so give the most realistic appearance. Ovals also give a good realistic appearance if you use Hollister Adhesive on them and wish to go topless.
Asymmetrical Shape breast forms or Helix shape look like a regular oval with an added narrow tip that is intended to mimic a ladies breast that carries on under the arm. This is often over-looked by many shapes and will effect how clothes fit etc. The asymmetrical shape is another development to increase the realism of the eventual shape. The narrower tip is worn either horizontally towards the side or diagonally toward the shoulder. Dressers with particularly prominent shoulders in relation to waist should consider a form like the GL2000N that helps to feminize broad shoulders with their extra width. These forms fill out bras well and can be adhered using spray adhesive or tapes and cost from $189.95 per pair.
Triangle Shape breast forms tend to mimic a ladies breast with the added droop but will often slightly exaggerate the protrusion so that if you are looking for a full breast going out then this is a style that you should consider. Smaller triangles may cost as little as $60 a pair and they look great in both regular bras and pocket bras and fill them out really well. Be sure to buy triangles that have rounded corners which then have the appearance of a realistic oval shape in a bra with a little more protrusion. The GL4000N are a perfect example of such a form. This is another style that is perfect for someone with manly shoulders as the extra protrusion will help soften the look of the broader shoulders.
Teardrop Shape breast forms are really a longer oval shape with a pronounced tail. There are a number of variations of the Teardrop but we will concentrate of two: the regular teardrop with concave back for those with more flesh in the chest area than the average person and the raised teardrop for those who like a little more protrusion. The thinner end can be worn towards the side, toward the shoulder or even straight up to gain the optimum shape. The GL3000N at $189.95 are specifically engineered for persons with more than average flesh existing in the chest area. They are more concave at the back than the average breastform to enable a good fit with the chest cavity. The Affordable Teardrop Breastforms start from $79.95 and are a good example of a raised teardrop that slightly exaggerates the protrusion outwards for those who want a’chestier’ look.
CUP SIZE: This is crucial when deciding on a purchase. If you are not blessed with a TG/CD walk-in store close by then you are probably faced with a long journey or shopping online. Most males have a AA or A chest and we consider that a passable look is achieved with a B cup up to 36/38 and that a C cup is passable from 38/40 and above. Obviously if you want to be more top-heavy that’s your choice but be aware that the larger you go the more attention and stares you will get if you venture out. At the other end of the scale, if you are a 42 and choose a B cup you may not look well proportioned, why? Breastforms are part of an overall approach to feminize your shape. They help give the illusion of a female figure by softening male shoulders and making the waist appear slimmer. If you have a ‘tummy’ they also help minimize your ‘paunch’ in profile and clothes will fit much better with your new shape.
If you have never worn a pair than purchase a cheap bra with a C or B cup and stuff with socks to give the shape the bra affords you and then look at yourself in the mirror to see if the proportion is right and the appearance pleasing to you. If it’s right then you have just found the cup size you need. Alternatively call one of our assistants on FREEphone 1-888 721 8688 (Overseas: 1-973 226 5588) and we’ll be glad to talk you through sizeing yourself.
IN CONCLUSION: Be sure wherever you end up spending your hard earned Dollars that you read the return/exchange policy – many vendors will not allow returns on breastforms. Here at www.GlamourBoutique.com we understand how difficult it is to get the size right that’s why we have live phone and online service for you 7 days a week to help. If you still find the breastforms are not what you expected then as long as you return them to us in as new condition and do not use adhesives on them then we will gladly exchange for size, give store credit or refund you the full cost of the pair of breast forms, no questions asked.
Do your research and you should end up with a great purchase wherever you go. Silicone forms have never been as affordable as they are at present – just be sure you get the shape and size that gives you the optimum female shape.
