THE CORRECT ORDER WHEN APPLYING MAKE-UP
This is a question we hear asked regularly from customers emailing us and clients who come to us for a makeover. Although some make-up artists will vary one or two steps according to their own technique and the needs of the customer having an application it DOES matter. Products like Make-up Primer, Foundation, Moisturizer etc have definite uses and if applied in the wrong order they will be ineffective. They also give a hint as to the natural order of application with their generic names i.e. ‘primer’ gives enough of a clue that hopefully even the most peroxide of blonds would ensure this was applied before and underneath foundation !
Before you begin applying your makeup it is important you have everything you need, including applicators, tissues etc so that you can be relaxed and focus on the task at hand rather than having to do a little and then fetch another item you need. Lay everything out on a work surface in front of the mirror you are using and try to order the products in the chronological order you intend to use them; this will help relative ‘newbies’ to remember the correct order of application rather than guessing or doing it incorrectly. Make sure all your brushes and sponges are clean and dry and in good condition and check your make-up supplies too. Make-up will breakdown over time, dry up, crack and even split so check the condition in advance of an application in case you need to purchase refills. Be sure to have the correct shades of foundation, eye colors, lipstick and blush particularly if you are trying a different look.
Now where to begin – what is the correct order to apply your makeup ?
Very important before any Make-up application is to prepare the skin – if necessary this will obviously include hair removal/shaving and then moisturizing. Applying an oil-free moisturizer not only gives the skin a smoother finish after cleansing but it actually stops the skin from creating excess oil. So, in addition to conditioning and hydrating the skin a good moisturizer will help maintain the eventual makeup application.
- Makeup Primer – The use of a good Primer definitely keeps the finished makeup application in place for much longer. Primer should be applied between the moisturizer and foundation stages of your makeover. Primers come in a gel form and are best applied using just the fingers. Most gurls apply primer to the whole face but at the very least it should be applied to those areas where the makeup comes off most easily: chin, nose, eyelids, and lips. Be sure to allow time for the primer to 'rest' for a few minutes prior to foundation application so that it is absorbed into the skin.
- Beard Cover/Concealer – If you have a visible shadow then the use of a beard cover is the next important stage. Apply with a latex sponge applicator and work against the grain of the beard to ensure a good even coverage. Layer on rather than apply in one thick layer. If a concealer is just needed on certain areas of discoloration then simply apply in dots and blend in with the tip of the finger. A good budget concealer for average skin types is a plain red lipstick but go easy with the amount you use.
- Foundation Application – Now apply Foundation to even out the skin tone. Be sure to get an exact match to your own skin tone or a shade slightly lighter. Here at GlamourBoutique we prefer the Professional Cream Makeup foundation by Celebre that comes with free applicators. Try applying in large dots on the central part of the face and then blend outwards with the latex sponge applicators. You should now have eliminated any skin tone variations and should be left with a nice smooth and even complexion for the rest of the makeup stages to be applied.
- Loose Powder – Very Important step here is to immediately apply loose powder over all the foundation to ensure it stays in place. We recommend a translucent anti-perspirant loose powder so that it also minimizes the effects of perspiration. Use a lot of powder – a good powder really will help to keep everything in place and will give a non-shiney, matt appearance.
- Contouring – Now is the time to add blusher to your cheeks and eye shadow. Find the apples on your cheeks by smiling and apply blush sparingly directly on the apples or just below. If you end up having to blend in the blush then it is either to bright or your brush marks are too pronounced. For eye shadow choose 3 shades: light, medium and dark. Apply the dark shade by lightly lining the upper eyelid, the medium is for the crease and then apply the lighter shade to the larger area just underneath the eyebrow. Again blend the lines in between each shade for a seamless appearance. Try different color pallets and techniques to evoke different moods from a softer natural look to smokey or dramatic.
- Detailing, including lips and eyes – Work on detailing should be carried out right at the end of the sequence otherwise you run the risk of hiding the fine detail work that really lifts the finished look. It’s also easier to cover the detail work with other contouring products and to smudge it unless left to the end. Lipstick, lip-liner, mascara, eyeliner etc are the very last steps in your application.
Follow the sequence above and you will make your makeup application an easier and more enjoyable session. Remember to have lots of makeup remover like Albolene along with tissues and cotton wool to have a convenient and quick makeup removal afterwards.
