  SMOKEY EYE LOOK

The Smokey Eye has become so popular due to the sultry, sexy look it produces in most facial types. It is a relatively simple application using just 2 shades of eye shadow - a dark contouring shade and a highlighter. Different effects can be achieved by the introduction of a third shade but the 2 shade process is relatively simple and very dramatic. This effect when carried out correctly draws attention to the eyes by highlighting the brow bone and making the eyelids very dark.

The classic black or grey smokey eye look is best suited to evening – if meeting the gurls for a spot of mall shopping followed by afternoon tea on a lovely summer day you may want to tone down and go for something a little more naturalistic if trying to pass. This is a sexy, demure, smouldering look and will get you many admiring glances. With Halloween around the corner our make-up artists think this is a must-have technique you need so get practicing whilst there’s still plenty of time. Whether you are going to be a witch or a sexy nurse this year, vamp it up with the classic smokey eye look.

As part of your all-over makeup preparation we take it for granted you have prepared the skin properly and included here should be primer application. As with your full facial makeup, a primer will help keep the eyelids oil free and so help with retention.
  • Eyeliner: Apply to just above the eyelash – for the classic look use a black eyeliner. Ensure the line you draw is thicker towards the center of the eye. See more articles in the Learning Center for tips on eyeliner application. Apply a lighter eyeliner to the bottom lash and smudge this line with a finger tip.
  • Light Eye Shadow: Apply a lighter shade as the base color from the eyelid all the way up to the brow bone – shades with a shimmer work particularly well in highlighting the brow bone.
  • Dark Eye Shadow: This is the key to creating the smokey eye look. Start at the lash line and blend the darker color upwards towards the crease and a little beyond so that it merges with the lighter color – this is essential for the full smokey eye effect. Also apply a thinner line of the darker contour color under the lower lid.
  • False Eyelashes: for all out glamour then apply a pair of false eyelashes or use a liberal application of plumping mascara on your own lashes.
Ensure you have the correct tools/applicators for the job to make your job easy as possible whether you intend using brushes and or Q-tips. As always practice this technique before you go out. Look at pictures of models with the smokey eye look and try to think of it in terms of the darkest color being closest to the eyelash area but getting lighter and lighter as it moves towards the brow bone. Remember to blend so that ther are no lines between the shades of shadow.
