What do I need to consider when purchasing a wig?

Wig Cap,
Wig Care, Color
Style

STYLING THE WIG :

Remember that synthetic wigs are just fancy kinds of plastic. When you first take them from the box, you will find that the fibers have been crushed together for a long time. Start by gently shaking the wig so that the hairs will become separated. Next use a brush or a pick comb without tiny balls at the end of each bristle (so there is nothing to catch and tear out the hairs)to comb the entire wig out in the opposite direction that it would normally set.
Then take the pick or brush to detangle and separate all of the hairs in the wig by turning the wig inside out and working from the bottom section gradually up until the full group of hair is detangled and separated. Then turn the wig right side out and repeat. Remember you are fluffing the hairs so that they don't look matted together. This will give the most natural look possible to the wig.
When the hairs are separated then work gently into place with the comb or your fingers until the style that you want is created. Spray into place as needed. Also a firm tug (not too hard) can also help to get the hairs to bend into the shape you need.
WARNING:
Very curly wigs should only be styled by using your fingers because the comb or brush may remove the curls.

WIG CARE :

Wigs do not need as much maintenance as one's own hair because unlike our own hair there isn't buildups of oils and dandruff from the scalp that need to be cleaned. Wigs generally need to only be cleaned of smoke and hair sprays that may be in the hair.
To clean the wig, simply fill the basin with warm water and a small amount of mild shampoo. Simply swish the wig gently around the shampoo/water for a few minutes. Remove the wig and refill the sink with clear water and then swish the wig around it again. Redo as necessary until the wig is clean. Take the wig and let it drip dry for a few minutes. Place it in a towel for about 10-15 minutes. Then let it air dry and then comb it back into its style.
Remember to never use hot curlers or a blow dryer on the wig. Synthetic fibers are liek plastic and will just melt from too much heat.

WIG CAPS :

There are several ways that wig caps are constructed .
WEFT - The most popular is weft construction either by Hand or machine. Wefts are chunks of hairs sewn together to create the wig. There is limited flexibility in changing the styles of wigs made in this manner. To make a wig made of this type of sonstruction look its best we recommend using a pick comb or brushes without little balls at the end of each brush bristle to lift and separate the ahirs from each. By making the hairs fluff slightly around the part area it will mask the weft and give the wig a more realistic appearance.
CAPLESS - Made via a machine that places small wefts horizontally of hair onto thin, vertical, elastic lace strips. These straps may be limited to the front forward area of the wig or extend to most of the cap. The term "capless" means that there are open spaces between the wefts. Generally, this type of contruction looks better that a fully weft system since it uses smaller groupings of weft chunks.
SKIN SCALPS - Skin scalps use small areas of latex which have hairs inserted into them to create realistic parts in the hair. Although the wig caps can tend to be heavier if there is an extensive skin scalp area, these type of wigs generally look very good.
MONOFILAMENTS or MONO TOP - A fine, transparent nylon or silk mesh serves as the base of the wig cap with hairs individually hand-knotted into the mesh will allow the hair to fall naturally and gives more versatility in styling. Some wigs have full mono tops while some may have only a smaller monfilament area where the part is. Very suitable for persons with extensive hair loss, as the color of the scalp underneath shows through, creating the illusion of hair growing out of your scalp. This is the top end of wigs because of the realistic look that they can give. They also tend to be expensive because of the hours of labor involved in producing them.
